PlanB Coaching > Head Coach – Conrad McKee
My journey into endurance sport began back in 1993. At the time, I was training in martial arts and wanted to improve my stamina and fitness. Running seemed like the obvious way to do it.
What started as a way to get fitter quickly became something much more. I discovered a genuine passion for running, joined Blackburn Harriers and began competing regularly. I loved the challenge of pushing myself, improving my times and discovering what I was capable of achieving.
Then, at the age of 30, I suffered a cruciate ligament injury that forced me away from sport for several years. I was also suffering with Undiagnosed Alcoholism. A disease that affects many people, but they just put it down to drinking too much.
For someone who loved running, being unable to do what I enjoyed was a difficult experience. But it also taught me an important lesson. Progress isn’t always a straight line, and sometimes life forces you to rethink your approach.
In 2011, with the help of Alcoholics anonymous, I finally put down the booze and answered the call to run again. The passion was still there. I started training, entering races and rediscovering the satisfaction of getting fitter and faster. Before long, I was back competing with Blackburn Harriers and achieving results I could be proud of.
It was a reminder that a setback doesn’t have to be the end of the story.
Sometimes, it’s simply the beginning of a different chapter.

In 2014, as running began to take its toll physically, I decided to explore triathlon a little more as I had entered events earlier in my career but really didnt like the thought of Open Water Swimming. Combining running, cycling and swimming offered a new challenge, a way to cross train and an opportunity to keep developing as an endurance athlete.
I soon discovered that moving from one sport to three wasn’t quite as straightforward as I’d imagined!
Cycling presented its own challenges, and I experienced first hand just how much there was to learn. Along the way, I worked with different coaches, learned from my mistakes and gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to prepare for endurance events.
That journey has taken me from local races to long distance triathlons, including Ironman events. Highlights include completing Ironman Bolton 140.6 in 10:41:31 and qualifying for the Ironman World Championship at Lanzarote in 2025.
But the results and finish times are only part of the story.
Every race has taught me something about preparation, pacing, resilience, recovery and the importance of getting the details right. I’ve experienced the good days, the difficult sessions, the unexpected setbacks and the moments when you have to dig deep and remind yourself why you started.
Most importantly, I’ve learned that getting better isn’t simply about working harder. It’s about understanding what works, being consistent and making the most of the time and resources you have available.
That’s the experience I bring to PlanB Coaching.
